ePaper: Don’t use the Snipping Tool to cut out articles!

ePapers are a first-rate source of information because the articles are reproduced 1:1 – just like in the real newspaper. It is also important that they are searchable , allowing new topics to be identified quickly and easily.

At first glance, copying the articles from the publishers’ e-papers and pasting them into a Word document seems tempting and the quickest way to do it. The PDF press review would be ready in no time, perhaps even with a table of contents created using a macro. It couldn’t be easier. Or so it seems.

So, what can we do better? The answer is expaper! expaper simply cuts out the article with millimetre precision. But that’s just one of its many advantages.

As the DataScan concept involves downloading all e-papers without requiring any further activity on publisher portals, various processes can be standardised and simplified:

  • Searches in ePapers are performed once and simultaneously in all ePaper PDFs. This means that you do not have to repeat your search for the most important keywords on every web page.
  • Search profiles allow you to save recurring searches.
  • Each publisher has its own website structure with its own search windows – expaper searches all PDFs in a standardised format.
  • Articles in the ePaper PDFs can be easily clicked on and cut out immediately. The article is copied in terms of both content and structure: the source, date, title, subtitle and author are all identified automatically.
  • These metadata are used not only for the table of contents in the press review or the article listing in the email, but also for the subsequent calculation of (German) copyright fees. It couldn’t be more efficient!
  • If adjustments need to be made to the press review afterwards, it can be reorganised very easily.

To summarise:

expaper
+ enables full-text searches using search profiles for known keywords
+ supports cross-reading when searching for new topics
+ delivers articles in their original layout
+ displays a schematic representation of the article on the page (‘source page mini’)
+ structures articles for press reviews and (German) copyright fee billing
+ creates added value by supporting internal archiving
